New, Energy Efficient Windows Save Money, Look Great

A recently published a report by the US Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy states that the average American household wastes between $200 – $400 of their energy bills a year on preventable energy loss. One of the costliest items on their list are drafts and air leaks around windows. The report projects that the potential energy savings from replacing drafty windows in a home can range from 7% to 15% per year. That’s a significant savings, not to mention your home will be much more comfortable both summer and winter.

ENERGY STAR Windows

You likely know about ENERGY STAR appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, and washers and dryers, but did you know that there are also ENERGY STAR windows? In fact, more than 85% of windows sold in the US today are ENERGY STAR certified. ENERGY STAR windows typically consist of two or three panes of glass in a fiberglass, vinyl, wood, or combination frame which means they can match any style of home. A gas such as argon or krypton fills the space between the panes to provide better insulation than just air, and special low-emissivity (low-e) coatings (a nearly invisible layer of silver) on one or more of the glass surfaces reflect infrared radiation, thereby making the window more energy efficient and reflect ultraviolet (UV) rays to minimize fading of furniture and drapes. All these features directly and indirectly save you money in the long term.
